LUX DEI: GOLD MOSAICS OF BASILICAS
SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE, ST. PUDENZANA, ST. PRASSEDE
Your guide will help you discover some of the most beautiful Christian mosaics of Rome. You will start from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, constructed in the V century under Pope Sisto III and dedicated to the holy virgin Mary.
The interior is mainly in Baroque style but it preserves, still intact, the cycle of mosaics dating from the V century, representing scenes inspired by the old and new Testaments. Many other treasures are also kept in the church.
Nearby, you will be able to visit the early Christian Church of St. Prudenziana with its magnificent apse mosaic, dating from the V century, in which Christ, flanked by the apostles, is represented. Furthermore, the domus romana, which can be visited by kind permission of the church’s guardian.
Finally, the Church of St. Praxed, where we will illustrate to you the superb high medieval mosaics, realized by Byzantine artists. The mosaics cover all the apse area, as well as the triumphal arch and the St. Zeno Chapel.
